Yarmouth, Friday 14 August 2026 – Tips and Selections

Yarmouth is a flat, fair track that suits horses who travel smoothly and stay honest. Good to firm ground today puts a premium on horses with a clean action and previous form on quick going. It is a modest card of six races, but there are three worth addressing, and one NAP that looks very hard to beat. William Haggas and Roger Varian both carry strong course records here, and the jockey angles through Silvestre De Sousa and Jack Mitchell are worth factoring in throughout.

Two runners. One is priced at 1/100. This is not a tipping puzzle, it is a formality. Matins, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Cieren Fallon, bolted up on debut and faces a single rival from a yard that has had just three runners at the track without a win in the past fortnight. Haggas runs at 21% at Yarmouth overall, and Matins is already a proven winner stepping into a race with virtually no opposition.

At 1/100, there is no betting angle here. If you want to include it as a banker in an accumulator, that is the only sensible use. Do not waste a stake on this at those odds. Emperor Aurelius has nothing in the book to suggest he can reverse what the market says.

Selection: Matins (NAP qualifier only, banker in multiples)

2:38 – British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (7f, Good To Firm)

Seven runners over seven furlongs on quick ground, and this one takes a bit more unpicking. Rock Montreal, trained by Roger Varian and ridden by Ray Dawson, is the odds-on favourite at 4/6, and it is not hard to see why. Varian operates at 21% at Yarmouth, and this yard has had six winners from 29 runners in the last fortnight, a decent clip. Dawson knows the track. Rock Montreal is a maiden but clearly expected to take care of business.

The danger, and the bet, is Stormy Winter Each-Way at 6/1 with Boyle Sports and LiveScore Bet. Jack Mitchell rides for Saeed bin Suroor, and while the Godolphin operation has been quieter than usual in this recent patch, Mitchell carries an A/E of 1.11 at this track, the highest of any jockey in the course data, meaning he outperforms expectations here consistently. Stormy Winter showed a placed fourth on debut, which is a solid building block for a juvenile at this stage of the season. The step up to seven furlongs on good to firm ground suits a colt that clearly did not lack stamina on first viewing.

At 6/1 each-way with two places on offer, you are getting a fair return if Stormy Winter runs to form and fills second. If Mitchell delivers something more, even better.

Selection: Stormy Winter each-way, 6/1 Boyle Sports/LiveScore Bet

3:13 – Download The QuinnBet App Handicap Stakes (1m3½f, Good To Firm)

Four runners over the longer trip, and this is where the sharpest angle sits. Divot, trained by William Knight and ridden by Jamie Spencer, arrives on the back of consecutive wins. Two in a row, the last just 17 days ago, means the horse is in form, fit, and operating with momentum. Spencer has ridden 155 winners at Yarmouth from 805 rides, a solid 19% strike rate with an A/E close to 1.00, meaning those winners come at fair prices.

The concern flagged is Divot’s speed rating of 64, which leaves him technically below the top-rated runner in the field. Arcturus Flame, with Cieren Fallon aboard and James Owen training, is rated 85 and carries the form of two placed efforts in recent starts. Owen runs at 19% at Yarmouth with a positive A/E of 1.03, one of the better course records on today’s card. Arcturus Flame has been consistent without winning, and his mark of 85 does make him the one to beat on figures alone.

The counter-argument for Divot is simple: momentum and confidence. A horse that has won two on the bounce carries an intangible that a rating alone cannot capture. The 2/1 available across the board makes Divot respectable value at this small-field price.

With only four runners, each-way is not in play. This is a straight win race. At 2/1, Divot is the selection on the basis of his in-form trainer, Spencer’s course record, and the fact that horses who arrive at a track on a winning run frequently find a way to keep going.

Selection: Divot, 2/1 Boyle Sports/Betfred/LiveScore Bet

Divot – Download The QuinnBet App Handicap Stakes (3:13, Yarmouth)
Odds: 2/1 – Boyle Sports (others: 2/1 Betfred, 2/1 LiveScore Bet)

Back-to-back wins going into this, William Knight’s yard in reasonable nick, and Jamie Spencer doing his usual quiet damage at a track where he has been landing winners for years. Good to firm ground is not an issue for a horse that has been winning on similar recently, and in a four-runner field there is nowhere to hide for the opposition. Divot is the one carrying confidence and recent form into this, and at 2/1 in a race he is capable of winning, that is enough.
