York Festival Day: Friday 21 August 2026 Tips
York’s Ebor Festival rolls on and Friday’s card is as competitive as anything you’ll find on the Flat calendar this summer. Seven races, two Group 2s, a Group 1 Nunthorpe and a pair of Heritage Handicaps make this a day to approach with a clear head and a selective eye. Good to soft ground suits horses with a bit of class and stamina, and the straight five furlongs in the Nunthorpe will again favour low-to-middle draws. Colin Keane’s remarkable 26% strike rate at York is a number worth keeping in your pocket all day.
1:50 โ Sky Bet Mile Handicap (Heritage Handicap)
Twenty runners over a mile in a Heritage Handicap is as brutal as it gets from a betting perspective, but Outback Heat Each-Way at 12/1 with Boyle Sports or Betfred is the one that catches the eye. Harry Eustace has been in tremendous form with four winners from 14 runners in the past fortnight, a yard firing on all cylinders. Outback Heat arrives rated top of the weights on the form book, a winner two back and second last time out, with proven form over the mile on ground exactly like today’s. The 64-day gap is the one query, but Eustace tends to have his horses ready when they reappear.
In a race with five-place each-way terms, the framing is generous. At 12/1 with five places, this is a bet for the place column as much as the win. Best price: 12/1 Boyle Sports and Betfred. EW terms: 5 places at 1/5 odds.
Noelan Star at 28/1 is a speculative each-way alternative if your book allows a second dart. Edward Bethell is red-hot right now and the horse won last time out. The draw in stall seven is fine over a mile at York.
2:25 โ Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup (Group 2)
A Group 2 over two miles and a half furlongs and the race shapes up around fitness and form recency. Mount Atlas is the most straightforward selection, arriving on the back of a win last time out with Andrew Balding, who returns 15% at this course with a positive A/E of 1.10. Seven wins from 56 runners in the past fortnight tells you Balding’s yard is functioning well. The 41-day absence is noted, but Balding is not a trainer who sends a Group 2 runner to York without having it ready. At 11/2 with Boyle Sports, this is fair money for a horse who heads the recent-form column.
Columbus at 9/1 interests at each-way terms for Willie Mullins, who sent out 11 winners from 29 runners in the past two weeks. Colin Keane rides, and his 26% win rate and A/E of 2.15 at York is the best statistic on the card today.
3:00 โ Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2)
The Gimcrack is the race that sets the tone for next year’s Guineas generation, and three horses dominate the market here. Adaay of Scarlett tops the ratings at 109, has been placed six times in six starts, and Oisin Murphy takes the ride. Murphy’s 16% at York with an A/E of 1.11 keeps him honest. But the angle here is Matteo at 12/1. Kevin Ryan’s yard has been quiet recently but back-to-back wins give Matteo a profile no other runner in this field can match. A rating of 106 puts him right in the mix, and experience over six furlongs on similar ground is confirmed. The 83-day break is the obvious risk and it’s a genuine one at this level. At 12/1 the case is worth making, especially each-way in a 12-runner Group 2.
If you want the race favourite, Arapaho Gold at 5/2 brings three straight wins and Michael Dods has had three from 27 in the past fortnight. Three from three is hard to argue with, but the step up into Group 2 company off 128lb is the challenge. This looks like a race where the margins will be small.
3:35 โ Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1)
Eighteen runners in the Nunthorpe, five furlongs, Group 1 prize fund of over ยฃ340,000. This is not a race to get carried away in, but value angles do exist in an 18-runner field with four-place each-way terms.
Night Raider Each-Way at 10/1 is the pick. K.R. Burke has been operating at a strong clip recently with eight wins from 32 runners in the past fortnight. Night Raider has two wins in his last five starts, proven form at five furlongs, and his draw in stall two is an asset in a race where low draws on the Knavesmire straight have historically mattered. At 141lb the weight is the same for every older horse in the field, so that neutralises itself. James Doyle takes the ride and he handles York well.
Rumstar at 14/1 is another each-way play worth a small interest. A win and a second in his last two starts on similar ground is a strong form line, even if Jonathan Portman’s yard has been quiet.
Best each-way price for Night Raider: 10/1 Boyle Sports and Betfred. EW terms: 4 places at 1/5 odds.
4:10 โ Assured Data Protection Handicap (Heritage Handicap)
French Duke Each-Way at 7/1 with Boyle Sports is the selection in this 17-runner Heritage Handicap over a mile and four furlongs. Rated 104 and topping the shortlist on the form figures, French Duke has proven distance and going experience and arrives fit on a 15-day turnaround. He won five starts back and the run pattern since has been in competitive handicap company. James Doyle rides and the 135lb burden is manageable.
The five-place each-way terms make this a genuine each-way play rather than a win-only proposition. At 7/1 with five places at 1/5 odds, the place return alone justifies the stake.
Tycoon at 12/1 is another who has been knocking at the door, finishing second and third in recent starts. Ryan Moore takes the ride and the horse has distance experience. On a day when Ryan Moore rides, you log his mounts regardless.
4:45 โ British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes
Fifteen runners in a seven-furlong juvenile maiden and the market has spoken clearly. Lancaster Tower at 2/1 with Gosden and William Buick is the obvious play. Gosden returns 20% at York and Buick 16% with an A/E bang on 1.00. A third on his only run suggests potential for a big step forward, and this trip should suit a well-bred Gosden juvenile on good to soft. Short enough for a single, but a logical banker in multiples.
Launch Sequence at 9/2 for K.R. Burke is the value alternative. Two thirds in two runs with plenty to build on. Burke’s yard is flying right now and James Doyle is a meaningful booking.
5:20 โ Sky Bet EBF Fillies’ Handicap
Plaid Each-Way at 11/2 with Boyle Sports catches the eye in this 17-runner fillies’ handicap to close the card. James Fanshawe has been in fine form with five wins from 22 runners in the past two weeks, and Oisin Murphy takes the ride. Plaid was a winner three starts back, ran third last time out and arrives on 128lb, which is relatively lenient compared to the top weights. The draw in stall 17 is not ideal over a mile and two and a half furlongs, but Murphy’s class should compensate on a day when the ground is good to soft rather than testing.
Lady Dora Mae at 4/1 for Ryan Moore and George Boughey has consistent place form and is a legitimate each-way alternative, though winning has proved elusive. Naga at 8/1 for Gosden and Buick tops the ratings and is the most interesting longer-priced play in the race.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 10/1 โ Boyle Sports (others: 10/1 Betfred, 9/1 LiveScore Bet)
K.R. Burke has been one of the form trainers of the past fortnight with eight winners from 32 runners, and Night Raider is the most straightforward expression of that stable confidence. Two wins in his last five starts, proven form at five furlongs on good to soft ground, and stall two on the Knavesmire straight are a combination that points firmly in one direction. At 10/1 in a Group 1 field of 18, the four-place each-way terms give this real value at a competitive price point.
