York Festival Card, Wednesday 13 May 2026: Full Tipping Guide
Seven races at York on good ground, a Group 2, a Group 3 and some deep handicaps to navigate. The Knavesmire plays fair in these conditions and the draw rarely dominates over six furlongs here the way it does at some tracks. A strong card top to bottom, so let’s get into it.
1:45 โ British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (5f, Good)
Varzi (11/10, Boyle Sports/Betfred) opens at odds-on and is the most interesting runner on the basis of connections alone. K R Burke has been ticking along at 4/41 in the last fortnight, nothing explosive, but he sends out juveniles to debut with a plan and Clifford Lee is a reliable partner at this level. Odds-on in a six-runner juvenile maiden is never a comfortable place, but if Burke has him ready the market is probably right.
The horse to watch at a price is Spectacular Diver (9/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred), trained by Tim Easterby. He comes in with a second on his debut and an RPR of 76 already in the book, which is more evidence than anything else in here can offer. Easterby has fired 6 winners from 71 runners over the past fortnight, a solid enough yard strike rate. On Good ground over five furlongs, a horse who has already shown he can place at this trip is a legitimate threat to the favourite.
Selection: Spectacular Diver at 9/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). If Varzi disappoints on debut, this one picks up the pieces.
2:20 โ Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap (1m4f, Good)
Eleven runners, three places, and a field full of horses rated between 105 and 113. These mile-and-a-half York handicaps can produce strong pace scenarios that favour hold-up horses late, and the going being good suits most of these.
Stressfree (5/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) for David O’Meara and Daniel Tudhope is the angle here. Tudhope knows York inside out, and O’Meara has been in decent nick at 5/40 over the past two weeks. The form string of 4355-2 reads like a horse that finds one or two in better form, but that placed effort last time is relevant over this trip and the RPR of 113 tops the field. He is not operating below his mark, but he is not being asked to do anything impossible either.
Plage De Havre (13/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred) with Oisin Murphy aboard is worth a second look. Andrew Balding has been in outstanding form at 15/71, one of the sharpest yards in the country right now, and Murphy rarely rides without a real chance at a venue like York. The form figures of 2P31-6 are mixed, but a win and a second in there suggest he goes well fresh and the class is there.
Selection: Stressfree Each-Way at 5/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). Top-rated, Tudhope in the saddle, O’Meara firing. Three places at 1/5 makes this a solid each-way play.
2:55 โ Churchill Tyres Handicap (6f, Good, 22 runners)
Twenty-two runners over six furlongs at York, five places paid, and a proper puzzle of a sprint handicap. This is exactly the race where you look for a horse in form with a handler firing on all cylinders.
Tuco Salamanca (6/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) stands out immediately. Trained by Ollie Sangster, who has been red-hot at 6/20 in the last fortnight, that is a 30% strike rate and one of the best on the whole card. Billy Loughnane picks up the ride, a jockey who does not take mounts at big meetings to make up the numbers. The form string of 1159-1 shows a winner last time out, and the six furlong trip on good ground suits. He is on a mark that still looks workable given that recent win, and at 6/1 in a 22-runner sprint, the value is genuine.
Binhareer (9/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred) for William Haggas and Tom Marquand is the market leader in waiting. Haggas has been exceptional at 11/43 in recent weeks and Marquand is a quality booking. The form of 12361- shows a recent winner and consistent placed efforts. He may drift out to 9/2 or beyond in the morning but that is fair enough for a horse trying to defy a penalty in a big-field sprint.
Selection: Tuco Salamanca Each-Way at 6/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). Sangster’s yard is the hottest stable on this card. Five places, winner last time, confident call.
3:30 โ Go Local Stores Minster Stakes (Group 2, 6f, Good)
The feature sprint of the afternoon. Thirteen runners in a Group 2 over six furlongs on a sound surface, and the field contains a couple of horses operating below their ceiling alongside some proven Group performers.
American Affair (15/2, Boyle Sports) catches the eye at the prices. Trained by Jim Goldie, who runs a no-nonsense northern operation and has been punching out winners at 4/29 in the past fortnight, this six-year-old gelding has a form line of /1151- that includes four wins and a second last season. His RPR of 123 tops this field, and while he is drawn wide and six furlongs on good ground asks questions, his class speaks for itself. Paul Mulrennan rides and knows the horse well. At 15/2 with Boyle Sports versus 10/1 elsewhere, take the top price.
Aramram (8/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) for Richard Hannon with Sean Levey also appeals. The 371-12 form shows a winner and a runner-up in recent starts, Hannon has been solid at 6/56, and 8/1 looks a fair price for a Group 2 contender with proven placed form at this level. He ran second last time and that form could be even better than it looks.
Cool Hoof Luke (5/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) with Oisin Murphy for Andrew Balding completes the shortlist. Balding’s yard is flying, Murphy is the best sprint jockey in the country right now, and 431/31 includes a recent third in smart company. If this is a stepping stone to something bigger for the yard, Murphy will get him organised.
Selection: American Affair Each-Way at 15/2 (Boyle Sports). Top RPR in the field, Goldie in form, Mulrennan on board, and four places at 1/5 is generous in a 13-runner Group 2.
4:05 โ Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 3, 1m2ยฝf, Fillies)
Six fillies, the Oaks trial, and a race that often produces a clear form line into the Classic. Legacy Link (11/10, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the natural favourite from the Gosden operation with Colin Keane riding. The yard has been in outstanding form at 10/38, and an RPR of 116 is comfortably the highest in the field. The form of 314- does include a third, which prevents her being an obvious banker, but the class is clearly there.
The danger is Felicitas (7/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred) for Ed Walker and Kieran Shoemark. Two runs, two wins, form reading 1-1. She is unexposed, clearly progressive, and Walker has been turning out winners at 4/33 recently. The step up to ten furlongs plus on good ground could suit a filly who has won with any ease at shorter, and 7/2 about an unbeaten runner in a six-horse field has genuine appeal.
Moments Of Joy (9/2, Boyle Sports) for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore is never straightforward to dismiss. O’Brien at 15/50 in recent weeks is strong, Moore is Moore, but the form line of 1325-6 includes a sixth last time and that is a concern stepping into a Group 3.
Selection: Felicitas at 7/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). Two from two, unexposed, Walker and Shoemark, and this trip should unlock more improvement.
4:40 โ Conundrum HR Consulting Handicap (7f, Good, 16 runners)
A competitive three-year-old handicap over seven furlongs and Al Najashi (9/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the selection without any hesitation. Trained by Ollie Sangster, who is once again among the sharpest trainers on this card at 5/21 in the past fortnight, Billy Loughnane takes the ride on a horse whose form figures read -11111. Four consecutive wins. He is chasing a fifth straight victory and while the handicapper will have caught up somewhat, a yard in this kind of form does not send a horse like this out without believing there is more to come. The seven furlong trip on good ground is right in his wheelhouse.
Hasbro Market (11/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred) for David O’Meara and Daniel Tudhope is a solid each-way alternative. Form of 212-2, consistent placed efforts, and O’Meara has been solid throughout this card.
Selection: Al Najashi Each-Way at 9/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). Four wins on the bounce, hottest trainer on the card, Loughnane booked. This horse is in the form of his life.
5:15 โ Stuey Weston & Friends Getting Out Handicap (1m4f, Good, 17 runners)
Closing the card, seventeen runners over a mile and four furlongs. Five places are on offer and this is a race for patience as much as raw pace.
Mafting (6/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) for David O’Meara and Daniel Tudhope is the each-way play. Form reads 347-12 and that most recent win and runner-up slot shows a horse coming into form at exactly the right time. O’Meara has had a productive card today and Tudhope has been busy and effective. The mile-and-a-half trip, good ground, and a handy mark make this a perfectly constructed each-way case at 6/1 with five places on offer.
Minhad (8/1, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is worth a mention. Trainer Ismail Mohammed has hit a remarkable 2/4 in the last fortnight, a 50% strike rate that demands respect regardless of sample size. The horse won last time out on the form of 8420-1 and Kyle McHugh takes the claiming allowance, which helps at the weights.
Selection: Mafting Each-Way at 6/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). O’Meara and Tudhope in form, recent winner and placed effort, five places at 1/5 in a 17-runner mile-and-a-half handicap. Ideal conditions for an each-way play to end the day.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 9/2 โ Boyle Sports (others: 9/2 Betfred, 4/1 LiveScore Bet)
Four wins on the spin, a trainer operating at exceptional strike rate over the past fortnight, and Billy Loughnane booked for a horse clearly at the top of his game. Ollie Sangster’s yard has two strong entries on this card and Al Najashi looks the standout of the pair. Good ground, seven furlongs, a horse in the form of his life, and a price that still represents value given the sequence. Take the 9/2 before it goes.
